The World Health Organization advises against E-cigarettes
Nessa Childers MEP said there had been a strong vote today in her Public Health Committee on the EU tobaccocontroldirective, despite the massive industry lobbying against the law. As co-chair of the MEPs against Cancer forum in the European Parliament, I have campaigned and pressed for this anti-tobacco legislation for a long time, she said. I am delighted that today we voted against the massive negative industry lobbying campaign whichtried to try to delay, block and defeat this legislation. The vote today called for pictorial health warnings covering 75 per cent of a cigarette package, front and back,as mandatory in the EU.

Electronic cigarettes: No smoking, but lots of fuming

Smokers have been banished from most public places, forced to nurse their addiction in private or outdoors. But what about vapers, the name for people who draw on electronic cigarettes that spew no actual smoke? Instead, they inhale — and then exhale — e-juice as a vapor containing liquid nicotine, flavored with such tastes as fresh tobacco and cotton candy. Should they be subject to the same restrictions?

The second question posed by the WHO is Is use of electronic cigarettes (ENDS) an effective method for quitting tobacco smoking? Again, the global health body answers by saying this has not been scientifically demonstrated. ENDS are often touted as tobacco replacements, smoking alternatives or smoking cessation aids. But we know that for smoking cessation products to be most effectively and safely used, they need to be used according to instructions developed for each product through scientific testing. There are no scientifically proven instructions for using ENDS as replacements or to quit smoking.
